Freedom Camping at Meatworks, Kaikoura

Kaikoura is a seaside town (population 3,860) on the east coast of the South Island, two and a half hours drive north of Christchurch. It's an amazing spot with loads of activities (both free and paid) to keep you entertained. If you're planning on visiting the South Island, this place is a must.  If you're driving a self contained campervan, you have a few options for accommodation. There's plenty of motels, fully serviced campgrounds and backpackers. If you're planning on freedom camping, you have to head north, out of town a little. One freedom campsite being 'Meat Works', a  popular right hand surf break about 20kms north of the Kaikoura town. There are plenty of non-self contained vehicles staying here too, but you're running the risk of a fine. It's got a toilet, a great view and it's relatively close to amenities in Kaikoura. On the downside, it can be quite exposed to the wind here and you'll also get some trains coming past, although you don't get too many in the middle of the night. You can use the free app CamperMate to get the precise location, but if you're driving north from Kaikoura, the site is where the road meets the sea after a 20 km drive in land. You'll see an old cenetery on the right. *Be careful as you drive in as it's a very busy corner. If you are driving north from kaikoura, I would advise that you drive past where you turn into Meatworks and after about 200 metres and you'll see a wide area to pull off to your left in. Here you can safely turn around and head back toward Meatworks. Here's a short clip of driving into Meatworks be careful of the railway crossing, make sure it's clear before you cross! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OSItsV0chds&feature=youtu.be You'll see in the video above, that the gravel road carries on to the right (see in this photo below) Meatworks As you drive along this road, you'll see a bunch of little bays like this one below. In the summertime, you need to be very quick as most of these are taken by about 5pm, but you can just continue on along this road until you find an empty spot. IMG_0801 (Large) This is an example of another bay, just near the public toilet. What a view! On a good day you'll also catch some surfers at the point near where you crossed over the railway tracks. main (Large) Meatworks is not the only location near Kaikoura where you can stay, check out the map below: Visit our new website www.camping.co.nz to see this website in full, click here for a video on how to use the website
