Freedom Camping in Picton

Picton is situated at the top of the South Island and has a population of around 3,000 people. It is a stunningly beautiful town surrounded by lush green bush and amazing views of the Queen Charlotte sound. The town is the arrival and departure point for the Interislander/Bluebridge ferries which have scheduled departures to Wellington ranging from 2 times a day in the off season to 6 times in the peak.Photo of Picton form the lookout If you are planning on taking your camper across you will be looking at a price starting from $200 including one driver, it's best to book in advance to get it at this price however. Once in Picton there are great facilities for parking your camper Sign for Campervansin the middle of the town with good foot traffic around so you don't have to worry about security. At 40c an hour for Campervan parking you will really feel like you're in a country bumpkin town, a great bargain with toilet facilities included. These spots are also a great way to meet other freedom campers. If you are looking to camp over night in Picton there is a good reserve called Collins Memorial Reserve which is  only 5 minutes out of Picton and  has toilets also available, this is a popular spot so it's wise to park up as early as possible. Collins Memorial Reserve A great recommendation if you get the chance to spend an evening in Picton is to get some fish & chips and take them down to the harbour which looks out toward Quuen Charlotte Sound, just watch out for those pesky seagulls though.
