It’s easy to find a supermarket in New Zealand, however knowing the different brands of supermarkets will ensure you get the most out of your money. There are two main companies (Foodstuffs and Progressive) that own around 98% of the supermarkets. The cheapest supermarket is normally Pak ‘n Save which saves on fancy in-store displays and makes you pack your own plastic bags, it’s a ‘no-frills’ approach to food shopping which will have you saving money at the end of the day. At the other end you have much smaller supermarkets such as ’4Square’s’ which is what you will normally find in smaller rural towns. They stock a much smaller range of items and have higher prices, these are great though for convenience.
